The incident occurred late Tuesday evening in Champigny-sur-Marne, about 15 kilometers southeast of central Paris. A group of about 40 unidentified people tried to storm the police station in the suburbs of the French capital. The perpetrators were armed with metal bars and fireworks.

“Violent attack last night on the police station in Champigny,” Paris police headquarters reported on Sunday. It added that none of the officers were injured. Among others, entrance doors and cars parked in front of the police station.

The motive for the attack – the third in two years at this station – is not yet fully known, although Champigny Mayor Laurent Jeanne has revealed that it may have been triggered after a moped accident, for which local residents blamed the police.
