An annual anti-Covid vaccine is preferable to constant reinforcements: CEO Pfizer

Pfizer Inc Chief Executive Albert Bourla said on Saturday that an annual vaccine against Covid-19 would be preferable to more frequent booster injections to combat the pandemic.

Pfizer and BioNtech’s anti-Covid vaccine has proven to be effective against severe illness and death caused by variant omicron, but less to prevent transmission.

With cases on the rise globally, some countries have expanded vaccine booster schedules or shortened the gap between doses.

In an interview with N12 News of Israel, Bourla was asked about the possibility of administering booster shots every four to five months regularly.

This will not be a good scenario. What I hope (is) that we have a vaccine that will have to be given once a year,” he said. “Once a year it’s easier to convince people to do it. It’s easier for people to remember.”

“So from a public health perspective, it’s an ideal situation. We are looking to see if we can create a vaccine that covers omicron and does not neglect the other variants and that could be a solution,” he added.

Bourla has said that Pfizer could seek approval of a redesigned vaccine to combat omicron and mass produce it in March.

Citing three studies, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention The CDC said Friday that a third dose of an mRNA vaccine is key to combating omicron, providing 90% protection against hospitalization.
