Amthor in “ntv Frühstart”: Criticism of anti-Semitism in “Muslim circles”

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation from Auschwitz, CDU politician Amthor complains of an increase in anti-Semitism. The problem is particularly common in “Muslim cultures”.

The CDU interior expert Philipp Amthor has warned of increasing anti-Semitism through more immigration from Muslim countries. “Anti-Semitism, one should not forget that, is particularly strongly represented in Muslim cultures,” said Amthor in the “ntv Frühstart”. It should not be neglected “that, of course, there are many concerns for the Jewish population here, given the background of migration in recent years. And I can understand that too.” German society “rightly” expects “immigrants to adhere to our culture”. “Then it also means that anti-Semitism has no place with us.”

On the occasion of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp 75 years ago, Amthor warned that the memory of the Holocaust should not be “formulaic”. “We have to react with a clear language in politics, but also with clear actions,” said the 27-year-old. He cited a study that 40 percent of the population knew little or very little about Nazi crimes. “Then we have to be alarmed that we are dealing with it more clearly, for example in school and education policy.”

Amthor also spoke out in favor of fighting anti-Semitism online. In this context, he praised the efforts of the SPD Minister of Justice, Christine Lambrecht, to “make it even easier to combat hatred and crime with the Network Enforcement Act”. He demanded that German society must ensure that “never again Auschwitz” must also mean “never looking away again”.

A lot of criticism of Amthor’s statements

The comments caused a lot of criticism. The parliamentary director of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Jan Korte, wrote on Twitter: “On the day of the commemoration of the bureaucratized, industrialized mass murder of Nazi Germany against six million Jews, to come up with such an idea – this shows the full extent of the problem in this country. ” The Green interior politician Konstantin von Notz said: “Sure, you have to take a close look at what P. Amthor said. But, as a German MP on the anniversary of the liberation of #Auschwitz with everything right-wing extremist anti-Semitism today – including the attack on Halle – anti-Semitism Locating it primarily as “Muslim” is extremely irritating. “

Amthor later told the German Press Agency that he felt misunderstood. In the statement from the interview, he “answered the question of what has changed in recent years”. For him, however, it was “completely clear that the greatest danger in the area of anti-Semitism naturally comes from right-wing extremists”. This was also demonstrated by police statistics “and the necessary focus of our political action”.
