Amsterdam hands out fine faster • Belgian spokesman’s slip of the tongue: ‘Enjoy virus’

The Chief Rabbinate of the Dutch-Israelite Main Synagogue (the Jewish community of Amsterdam and the surrounding area) has issued a special instruction for blowing the shofar. This must be done in such a way that the spread of the corona virus is prevented.

A shofar is a ram’s horn. Then every day for a month the synagogues blow to announce the upcoming important holidays Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Last night, with the beginning of the Jewish month of Elul, they started.

The bottom line is that whoever blows the shofar is completely wrapped in his tallit, the white garment that Jewish men wear while saying prayers. The horn must be completely below the tallit. This is to prevent the shofar blower from spreading any coronavirus that may be present.

If the shofar blower has symptoms of disease, he should not blow.
