America’s largest cargo port was flooded with parcels from Asia

Fifty percent more shipments arrived in North America’s busiest container port in all of America in the second half of the year than in the first six months.

Gene Seroka, the director of the port, which handles about a fifth of all cargo to the United States each year, told the station CNBC. He also said that the docks are overloaded. Loaded ships therefore normally have to moor at sea and wait. “We don’t buy services, we buy goods,” Seroka commented on the change in consumer behavior stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, which caused a turbulent year in California’s over-hundred-year-old port.

In November alone, 890,000 shipments arrived at the port, up 22 percent year-on-year. Since August, the average monthly number of shipments has climbed to almost 930,000.

In record volume, mainly goods from Asia are poured into LA. Conversely, US exports through the port have been declining over the past two years, partly as a result of US trade policy towards China.

The influx of containers brought all American logistics under considerable pressure. The high demand for goods that Americans are buying to make their home stay much more frequent has led to significant delays in unloading ships in ports across the United States. There is a noticeable lack of necessary storage capacity, CNBC recalls.

They do not expect a slowdown in freight traffic in Los Angeles, on the contrary, they assume that a larger number of containers will arrive at the docks in a few more months. The port therefore focuses on digitizing and optimizing deliveries and logistics.
