According to a report from the New Zealand Herald, Alinghi are back in the America’s Cup after 11 years away. The Swiss union paid the registration fee for the right to compete in the 37th edition of the America’s Cup, which will take place in 2024.
Alinghi, owned by Ernesto Bertarelli, won the America’s Cup for the first time in 2003. The Swiss union had successfully defended its title in 2007 in Valencia before losing in 2010 against Americans Oracle. Also victorious in 2013, the American team handed over the trophy to Team New Zealand in 2017. The New Zealanders retained the prestigious trophy last March.
The New Zealand city’s lockdown, which is trying to eliminate the highly contagious Delta variant, has forced TNZ to give itself more time to choose the site for the 2024 America’s Cup. The decision is expected to come before March 31 2022. Cork in Ireland, Valencia and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia are mentioned for the organization of the next edition.
