America will evaluate the continuity of Santiago Solari

The board of America reported this Saturday after the elimination of the team in the Mexican Apertura that in the following three weeks they will analyze the continuity of Santiago Solari in the technical direction of the group, despite having carried out the best campaign of the regular phase of the Apertura 2021, where he was eliminated against Pumas after losing 3-1 in the second leg at the Azteca stadium.

“The board will take the next three weeks to evaluate the sporting project in the short to medium term. The necessary measures will be taken to ensure that Club América returns to the place it belongs: to be the most winning champion team in Mexico“he explained in a press release titled ‘Sorry to the American fans’.

América’s result against the Felinos raised doubts in Solari’s project since his team entered the game as the favorite to advance to the semifinals by finishing as the leader of the Apertura classification.

Solari took over as America’s coach in January 2021. In two league tournaments they have not advanced beyond the quarterfinals and in October they lost the final of the Concacaf Champions League to Monterrey, results that managers have described “for oblivion.”

“The performance and results of Club de Fútbol América are not as expected by the board, much less the fans,” América added in the statement. In addition to evaluating the work of the Argentine strategist, the Águilas board will put the management of the sports president, Santiago Baños, to the test, who has not been able to give América a title since the Apertura 2018.

Santiago Solari complained before the start of the Apertura that he was urged by a winger on the right, a position in which Baños did not manage to get him a signing. The Rosario, former River and San Lorenzo player, drew on a squad without great names and recovered players erased in previous processes such as the Colombian Roger Martínez. Nevertheless, their efforts were not enough to give América its fourteenth league title to confirm itself as the winner in Mexico.

Solari: “I am not thinking of resigning”

However, minutes before the América statement, Solari had been clear with his intentions. Conflict at the door? “No, at no time have I thought about quitting. I can’t lose sight of the global. We are disappointed, but I also say that this is the team that scored the most points“said the coach – former coach of Castilla and Real Madrid – at the end of the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Apertura 2021.

Solari referred to the fact that the Eagles finished as leader the regular phase of the Apertura 2021 in first place with 35 points, 14 more than the Pumas who finished eleventh. He also recalled that his team had a streak of matches without losing at the Azteca Stadium of 18 games; nine from Clausura 2021 which included eight wins and a draw; as well as nine from Apertura 2021, seven wins and two tied, until this fall.

“I understand that the tournament is like this. We have carried out the regular phase by note and we emphasize that, then this Liguilla comes, which is a new tournament and we have to accept that we are clearly duty-bound in this phase,” he acknowledged.

The loss to Pumas is the second elimination of the Eagles in the quarterfinals under the leadership of Indiecito. The first was in the Clausura 2021, in which Pachuca kicked them out of the final phase.

“We are very sorry about the result, it is very painful for the fans and for all of us. The group has made a huge effort day after day and we could not translate that effort that we had previously made. It hurts a lot.”

Santiago Solari shared the burden of eliminating the contest equally. “We are all responsible. It is a moment of pain, of self-criticism, of looking at each other to see how we can be better next year“, he said. If there is next year, of course …
