America remains “first”

Commentary on Joe Biden’s inauguration.

With Joe Biden taking office, many heads of state both in and outside of Europe were able to breathe a sigh of relief. Much has been said about a new beginning for transatlantic relations.

The hope is understandable, but only partially justified. Joe Biden will try to be forgiving. And he will certainly not use the mantra-like motto “America first” of his predecessor. But Biden is not driven by altruism either. As president, he is obliged to think of his country first.

Nevertheless, Europe and the world can expect improvements. Because with Biden you have a reliable partner as a counterpart. The USA will again assume responsibility, as expressed in international obligations.

Biden has already proven that he knows that things like nuclear non-proliferation treaties and climate agreements are essential because they can become a matter of life and death for his country too.

And Biden also knows that the world power USA also needs strong allies and therefore has to be a reliable ally. America will remain “first” under him, but will also look across the borders again.
