AMD Unveils New 3D Cache Technology Delivering 15% More Gaming Performance

Processors with the new feature will arrive from the end of 2021

At the end of the conference of the AMD for the Computex this year, the company’s CEO, Lisa Su, presented news about the development of a new technology for positioning SRAM vertically on the processor. This allowed a 64MB cache increase resulting in 15% average gain in gaming performance.

A AMD developed this technology in collaboration with TSMC using TSVs (through-silicon-vias) in order to “stack” 64MB of SRAM directly onto the CCD, the height difference generated by this process was corrected by silicon and does not bring significant changes in the final size or thickness of the processor.

Lisa Su still hasn’t explained how this change might have changed the hierarchy of the different CPU cache memories, however, we know that the total CPU cache memory rises to 100MB, with 4MB L2, 32MB L3 plus 64MB of the vertical cache in 3D.

“We’re taking this Ryzen 5000 processor and stacking a 64MB SRAM at 7nm directly on top of each core complex, effectively tripling the amount of L3 cache powering our Zen 3 cores. 3D cache is plugged directly into the CCD of Zen 3 with two-way silicon transmitting signals and power between stacked chips, with support for bandwidth of more than 2TB per second. “

Lisa Su even showed a prototype of a Ryzen 9 5900X with this new technology during the presentation and also presented a comparison between the Ryzen 9 5900X without the 3D cache and with the 3D cache in the Gears 5 benchmark. only the greater amount and cache brought a 12% increase in game performance, and this increase was even greater in other scenarios, as shown at the event.

The CEO claims that in several games, the new cache-positioning technology has increased on average 15% na performance observed, which may represent a margin for AMD to strengthen an advantage against Intel’s Rocket Lake-S architecture.

Lisa Su announced that this technology will arrive at the end of 2021, which leaves room for us to speculate that the 3D vertical cache will be the differential of the possible Ryzen 6000 models, but we still don’t have any confirmation of this theory.

For more details on the new SRAM “stacking” technology on top of the processor CCD, you can watch AMD’s presentation at Computex 2021 from the minute 32:32, when Lisa Su enters the stage to present the news.
