Amazon settles almost 29 million euro case with FTC over user privacy violation with Ring and Alexa devices

Amazon has reached a settlement of almost 29 million euros in the United States. Regulator FTC had filed a case against the tech company. Amazon would violate user privacy with its Ring video doorbells and smart Alexa speakers.

Ring employees had access to customer video footage until 2017, according to the regulator. The company behind the video doorbell was acquired by Amazon in 2018.

After the acquisition, according to FTC, Amazon would not have done enough to solve the privacy flaws. In this case, the tech company has reached a settlement of 5.4 million euros.

The other case was about the Alexa smart speaker. The regulator found that the device collected information from children under the age of 13 without parental consent. That is against US law.

Amazon said in a statement that it disagreed with the FTC’s claims. The tech company denies breaking the law. Nevertheless, the company pays 23.4 million euros in this case to get rid of further legal wrangling.
