Amazon received a huge fine of 19 billion crowns from the EU

The Luxembourg Privacy Office CNPD fined Amazon Europe Core in a decision of 16 July.

“We believe that the CNPD’s decision is unfounded, and we intend to vigorously defend this,” Amazon said. GDPR requires user companies to seek consent before using their personal information. Otherwise they face heavy fines.

The CNPD is the main privacy regulator for Amazon in the EU, as the company is headquartered in Luxembourg.

The Wall Street Journal wrote in June that the impending fine of $ 425 million (9.12 trillion crowns) would be the highest fine ever imposed under these rules. It would correspond to about two percent of last year’s net profit of Amazon, which amounted to 21.3 billion dollars (457.23 billion crowns).

Amazon is the largest online store in the world. It was founded by Jeff Bezos, who is currently the richest man in the world. In the second quarter of this year, the company increased its net profit by almost half year-on-year to $ 7.78 billion (approximately CZK 167 billion).
