What movies and series to watch on Amazon Prime Video this weekend?

One of the best uchronic series: Le Maître du Haut Château 8/ 10

Synopsis

1947. The United States finally capitulated to the joint forces of Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan. The lands of Uncle Sam are therefore now shared between the two powers that govern the new world with a master’s hand. But, fifteen years later, the Führer is dying and his agony completely shuts the cards.

Tensions between Germans and Japanese are exacerbated and in this troubled context, resistance is organized. A group of rebellious attempts by all means to pass a prohibited propaganda film. A perilous mission from which not everyone will emerge unscathed.

What we think

Adapting a novel is always a perilous exercise and many have broken their teeth. Obviously, we were very curious to discover The Master of the Haut Château, inspired by the famous eponymous novel by Philip K. Dick. Well, as much to say at the outset: we were not disappointed, the series by Eric Overmyer and Frank Spotnitz keeps all its promises.

Uchronie is an interesting narrative construction in many ways. Starting from a historical point of view, here the Second World War, it allows to unfold a completely fictitious story. In The Master of the Castle, the mastery of gender codes is very good. The universe is rich, credible and rather well explained, even if we would have liked a few more details (to remedy it, you will have to read the book).

The series can also count on its unique atmosphere to seduce. Carried by its unusual plot, sublime decor that does justice to the time of the story and a concrete scenario, it shows potential from the first episode, before going up crescendo. Moral of the story: if you haven’t already, look The Master of the Haut Château without hesitation.

A high-flying comic series: Fleabag 8.7/ 10

Synopsis

The colorful daily life of Fleabag, a frank and spicy thirty-something Londoner, to whom life frankly does not make a gift. Bereaved by the death of her best friend, she tries as best she can to turn the cafe she manages, while sailing in sight in her private life.

Funny, ironic and full of derision, she does not hesitate to share her reflections on those around her, always with the scathing spread of which she has the secret.

What we think

British humor is not for me“Beware of this presupposition, it could make you miss out on Fleabag, arguably one of the tastiest British comedies of recent years. Imagined and interpreted by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag could well reconcile you with the humor of Her Majesty’s subjects.

The series manages to break the codes to speak to an international audience. Fleabag’s life is an interstellar bazaar. Her professional daily life is anything but idyllic, her couple is hanging by a thread and she doesn’t get along with her family, to say the least. To make matters worse, she has a real addiction to sex and kleptomaniac tendencies.

A pitch classic you say. Except that the show manages to stand out by fully assuming its difference. Trash, transgressive and definitely not for the general public, Fleabag does not prohibit anything. Her heroine is completely freewheeling and finds herself in more absurd situations than each other.

She is not naive, a trait often shared by key characters in sitcoms. On the contrary, it shines with its lucidity and cynicism. Another very positive point: the moments facing the camera where Fleabag speaks directly to the spectator. It breaks the Fourth Wall, never overdoing it or falling into the easy shot.

This may be a detail, but it confirms our opinion: Amazon has struck a big blow by agreeing to produce Fleabag.

A very good film: Stop me if you can 8.1/ 10

Synopsis

Franck Abagnale Jr. is an elite crook, the kind you only meet once in a lifetime. Become master in the art of falsifying documents, he managed to divert millions of dollars by multiplying juicy schemes.

A chameleon with a thousand faces, Franck takes on multiple identities to escape the FBI who is chasing him. But Carl Hanratty, a seasoned and intractable agent, makes up his mind to corner him at all costs. Then begins a real game of cat and mouse between the two men.

What we think

Steven Spielberg is part of the very closed circle of directors capable of putting on excellent films like pearls. Stop me if you can is no exception to the rule, on the contrary, it is even one of the most successful in our eyes (even if there are a slew of others of the same ilk).

Here, he therefore chooses to transpose the abracadabranteque true story of Franck Abagnale Jr on the screen. The memories of this high-flying swindler are obviously not easy and the film is nothing more than a tale of his crazy runaway to escape the FBI.

The scenario is classic (but effective), the story well conducted and Spielberg makes sure that his viewer does not get bored for a second in front of his screen. The feature is rhythmic, and it has more than its share of suspense. The light tone and well-placed humor with which it is filled also make its charm and Stop me if you can never manages to go overboard.

Add to that an excellent casting carried by Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken and you get a very sure value of the Hollywood cinema of the last twenty years.
