Amazon Prepares Free Phone Plan for Prime Subscribers in the US: Can They Disrupt the Telecoms Market?

Amazon is preparing a free phone plan for its Prime subscribers (in the United States). Could the giant thus make a place for itself in the telecoms market?

Amazon might be planning to offer its Prime subscribers a rather nifty new perk: a free phone plan. According Bloombergthe American giant is currently discussing with several American operators to offer a very affordable mobile service – around $10 per month – or even free to its Prime subscribers. At present, Amazon is said to be in negotiations with the three major carriers in the country (Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile) as well as Dish Network, but it seems that discussions have already stopped with AT&T.

It will certainly take some time before such an offer can see the light of day, Bloomberg explaining that the exchanges have only been running for six to eight weeks. There is no guarantee that this will work. But given the prices of mobile plans in the United States, this could represent a potentially very interesting offer for Amazon customers. Of course, this would require even more engagement with Amazon, which already has ramifications in many industries today.

As of this writing, there are no details as to what form Amazon says this potential phone service might take, or even whether to expect the same level of service as you might. have by subscribing directly to Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T. Most often, operators offer more data at 5G speeds depending on the specific offer chosen by users; there are also a whole host of various advantages that operators offer in addition today, such as Netflix at T-Mobile or Apple Music or Disney+ at Verizon.

It’s not hard to imagine, however, that many customers might give up some of these options or even superfast broadband to earn free mobile service. This, of course, is if they’re okay with tying things even closer to Amazon – but if you’re already a Prime addict, that might make signing up even more attractive.
