Amazon closes distribution centers until April 20… at least

Following the decision of the court of Nanterre, Amazon suspends the activities in its distribution centers in France. Products delivered by businesses directly, not Amazon, may continue to be.

Small earthquake in the French e-commerce world while the confinement has recently been extended by a month. “This week, we will ask the employees of our distribution centers to stay at home.” On the Amazon France Twitter account, the announcement is official on Tuesday, April 15. The e-commerce giant will close its distribution centers following the decision of the judicial court of Nanterre, taken the day before. Justice has indeed summoned the behemoth of e-commerce to reduce its activity to the reception and shipment of food, medical and hygiene products. “Considering the complexity inherent in our logistics activities and the fine of one million euros per infraction imposed by the court, the risk of contravening the decision was too high”, justifies the French subsidiary of the international e-commerce site . Products delivered by businesses directly, not Amazon, may continue to be.

During the CSE Central meeting held on the afternoon of April 15, the CFDT Amazon France Logistique leaked some information on social networks. The union communicated on the total assumption of responsibility of partial unemployment by Amazon until April 20 inclusive, including for the temporary workers (increase for the night work, substitute, premiums T3). Impossible to indicate the precise moment when the partial unemployment procedure will be activated, but the CFDT notably mentioned the cessation of activities on the Montélimar logistics site from Thursday, April 16 at 1:10 p.m.

According to the union, the reception and dispatch services are affected by the partial unemployment measures. Only maintenance, IT, management and safety services would be present in the distribution centers. The CFDT adds that Amazon employees who have enjoyed their right of withdrawal do not need to renew it in the context of partial unemployment declared by the management: they will be paid during these 5 days to the tune of 100% in the same way than their colleagues.

In its series of tweets, Amazon did not provide more details. Bitter, the merchant site recalled having implemented temperature controls, distributed more than 1.5 million masks, more than 27,000 liters of hydroalcoholic gel, more than 127,000 packs of disinfectant wipes and reinforced social distancing, since the beginning of confinement, a month ago.
