Amazon CEO Bezos puts 10 billion in climate protection

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the richest man on earth, has announced that he will invest ten billion dollars in climate protection. “The earth is the only thing we all have in common – let’s protect it together,” he writes on Instagram. Business magazine Forbes estimates its assets at around 130 billion dollars.

The ten billion goes to the new Bezos Earth Fund, a fund that scientists, activists, NGOs can call upon if they want to protect the climate. Grants are awarded from the summer.

“I want to work with others on existing and new ways to fight climate change,” writes the multi-billionaire. “We can save the earth. That requires joint action from large companies, small companies, countries, global organizations and individuals.”

Charities

Bezos was by no means known for his love of charities, unlike fellow billionaires such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and George Soros. That changed in 2018, when he donated two billion dollars to charities, more than anyone in the United States.

Bezos’ internet company Amazon emits a lot of CO2 from the trucks, vans, planes and ships that are needed to deliver packages. Last year the company announced that in 2030 it only wants to use renewable energy. In 2040, Amazon wants to be CO2 neutral.
