Although Light, Do Not Regard Trivial Chest Pain Page all

KOMPAS.com – Not all chest pain is the same, but all chest pain should not be ignored – especially if it is persistent, recurrent or even severe.

Chest pain that suddenly appears requires evaluation by a doctor. If the pain is severe, it means you should immediately seek medical treatment.

Likewise if chest pain is not severe, emergency treatment is needed if the pain is persistent or the chest feels painful like a squeeze.

In fact, according to Harvard Medical School, persistent pain or pressure in the chest can be an emergency symptom of Covid-19.

So, it is important to seek medical help immediately if you experience chest discomfort during this pandemic. It’s better to know the cause, than to stay in the dark.

Covid-19 infection or other chest infections, such as pneumonia, can sometimes mimic a heart attack in terms of chest pain and respiratory problems,” said a cardiologist in Singapore, Dr. Peter Ting.

“Statistically, young people are less likely to develop coronary heart disease compared to older people, because it is a degenerative disease.”

“However, we see more people in their 20s to 30s having heart attacks due to increased risk factors such as smoking, stress, not getting enough sleep, and exercising too much,” he added.

Other illnesses that are less life-threatening but are equally worrying, can include inflammation of the esophagus, ribs, gallbladder, and epigastrium (upper abdomen).

Chest pain is often misinterpreted

According to Dr Ting, who is also Medical Director at the StarMed Specialist Center, Singapore, problems related to the heart often overlap with gastroesophageal reflux problems or GERD.

A similar statement was made by Dr. Shanker Pasupathy, a gastrointestinal specialist. According to him, chest pain is only the location of pain. Symptoms of this pain are often misinterpreted because of the position of adjacent organs.

“I have seen people who experience pain in the chest area consider it a stomach problem, but apparently it is a symptom of a heart problem,” he said.

“On the other hand, people who have done all kinds of heart tests turned out to be all negative, and when we did endoscopy, we found that it was a gastro-related problem,” he continued.

Because of the same symptoms and the position of adjacent organs – pain usually appears in the middle chest or epigastric region (the area just below the chest), this is what sometimes makes it quite difficult to distinguish between cardio and gastro problems.

Moreover, chest pain is often not specific and requires further evaluation to find out the underlying cause. Therefore, when you feel chest pain, it is better to immediately consult a doctor to find the cause.
