“We are not afraid of US sanctions, we are used to them,” the deputy of Sergei Lavrov said in a statement, as reported by Tass on Thursday (21/8/2020).

“It will not affect our policies in any way. Our cooperation with Iran is multifaceted, defense cooperation will develop depending on the needs of the two countries and the common will,” he continued.

Ryabkov’s remarks came shortly after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that UN sanctions against Iran were starting to come back into effect. He said the US was ready to punish countries that opposed the sanctions.

“The US will not hesitate to enforce our sanctions and expects all member states to fully comply with their obligations under these re-imposed restrictions,” Pompeo said.

Regarding this, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell said that Washington cannot unilaterally restore international sanctions against Tehran. (Also read: Ask for Uncle Sam’s help to finance infrastructure, Ani and the US Minister of Finance meet virtual)

In addition, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council (DK) that he could not take any action on the US declaration that all UN sanctions against Iran had been reinstated. This is because there seems to be uncertainty about the matter.
