Already more cases of tick-borne encephalitis than last year

158 people developed tick-borne encephalitis in the Czech Republic for the period up to the end of June, already more cases than last year for the same period. The number of cases of borreliosis, another tick-borne disease, is however lower than last year for this same period (1,035 people affected), according to the latest data from the National Institute of Health (SZÚ).

The number of cases of these tick-borne infectious diseases tends to increase with the arrival of summer when people are hiking in the wild. Unlike tick-borne encephalitis, there is currently no vaccine against Lyme disease (or borreliosis) which affects an increasing number of people each year. Currently, Czech and American researchers are collaborating to develop a vaccine whose first clinical tests on mice are showing promise.
