The Floriade in Almere has to take into account even fewer visitors than expected. Councilors were told this tonight at a meeting in town hall, writes Broadcasting Flevoland† The Floriade needs millions more to stay open until the planned end date of October 9.

Although the Floriade still hopes for 1.2 million visitors, the municipality already indicated last week that 800,000 people should be taken into account earlier. Even for that scenario, the Floriade will have to attract considerably more people than has been the case in recent weeks.

If the visitor numbers do not rise sharply in the coming months, a figure of 620,000 to 680,000 visitors seems more realistic, according to a calculation by the municipality.

7 million extra

Last week it was announced that the city has to commit an extra 33.8 million to the event. In order to remain open in the coming months, the Floriade needs an extra loan from the municipality of Almere. The scenario of 820,000 visitors involves 7 million euros. The total loan from the municipality to the Floriade will then amount to 71.5 million. If the visitor numbers actually do not exceed 680,000, an additional amount of about 5 to 6 million must be added.

During the session in the town hall, the possibility of closing the Floriade prematurely or even going bankrupt was also discussed today. According to the college of mayor and aldermen, that will cost the city more than staying open, although the exact price tag of these alternative options is not yet clear.
