“All in Chorus”: 200 Children Perform Repertoire of Opera Classics and Film Music in Nancy with National Orchestra of Lorraine Conductor

A choir of 200 children, aged 8 to 12, takes the stage in Nancy this Friday 8 and Saturday 9 June to perform a repertoire of six songs, learned and rehearsed with the orchestra of the national opera of Lorraine, and its conductor. Some 800 people are expected for each of the two performances, which take place at 7 p.m. at L’Octroi, boulevard d’Austrasie, in Nancy.

From “Carmen” to “Star Wars”

The project, named “All in Chorus” was conducted during the school year in six schools, three schools and three colleges, in the Nancy, Tomblaine and Vézelise sectors. The children thus learned the songs alongside music teachers, before coming to rehearse all together in the great Hall of the Granting. “It’s amazing to be 200, and with the orchestra too“, smiles Sheïma, in CM2 at the Ory school, in Nancy.

The 10-year-old girl carefully follows the gestures of the conductor, posted high up on a platform. “It is he who tells us when we start to sing, when we get up, when we sit down, he directs us“, describes Sheïma, lined up in a tight row alongside her comrades. The repertoire is very varied: it goes from opera classics, like “Carmen” or “The Magic Flute“, to film music, like “Star-Wars“.

Popularizing opera

The choir is organized in conjunction with the City of Nancy, the metropolis, the rectorate and the regional directorate of cultural affairs for the Grand-Est. “What interests us in this project is the journey, the trajectory that these children have because we really believe in the idea of artistic and cultural education.“, confides Matthieu Dussouillez, director of the national opera of Lorraine, this awareness can help them to better live their schooling.”

The performances are at 7 p.m. at l’Octroi, boulevard d’Austrasie, in Nancy. Admission is free within the limits of available places.
