All DFB Cup winners since 1995 eliminated

From the dream of defending the title: Borussia Dortmund and striker Erling Haaland made a fool of themselves in the DFB Cup and missed the quarter-finals. After a very weak performance, the big favorites were beaten by the rebellious FC St. Pauli in the round of 16 at Millerntor 1:2 (0:2). “We’re really disappointed, especially because we brought a lot of energy here after the last two games. But there was no sign of this energy in the first ten or 15 minutes,” BVB coach Marco Rose.

Assuming a win against FC Hansa Rostock in the round of 16 duel this Wednesday in Leipzig (6.30 p.m.), last year’s finalist RB Leipzig is now the top favorite for the cup win. Because two other Bundesliga teams have already been eliminated. In the two first division duels between Hertha and Union and Hoffenheim and Freiburg, two other clubs from the upper house have to give up.

Second division club Hamburger SV won 4:3 at favored Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln in a curious penalty shoot-out. After 120 minutes it was 1-1. With the last shot, Cologne’s Florian Kainz hit the goal, but touched the ball twice. “I slipped away. It’s a difficult story for me personally. I’ll be able to deal with it,” Kainz quarreled.

VfL Bochum reached the next round with a 3-1 (0-1) win with a brace from striker Milos Pantovic against league rivals FSV Mainz 05. Meanwhile, Karlsruher SC is at the third division after a 1-0 (0-0) win at work 1860 Munich in the quarterfinals of the cup for the first time in 25 years.

Cup winners of the last 27 years eliminated

For the first time since the 2006/07 season, the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup will be played without BVB and record winners FC Bayern after the elimination of defending champion Dortmund. Bayern had already had to say goodbye in the previous round at the end of October after a 0:5 loss at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

And many other co-favorites and former title holders such as Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg have already been eliminated. Bayern have won the cup 20 times in 24 final appearances, followed in the all-time list of winners by Werder Bremen (6/10), FC Schalke 04 (5/12), BVB (5/10) and Eintracht Frankfurt (5th). /8) – all discarded.

Of the teams still in the competition, Borussia Mönchengladbach was the last to win the pot in 1995. Borussia has to play at Hannover 96 this Wednesday (6.30 p.m.), cup winners from 1992.

The four other round of 16 will take place this Wednesday. Among other things, the Berlin derby between Hertha BSC and Union is pending. The quarter finals will be on 1./2. held in March.
