all about the screening campaign in the Rhône

The Region specifies the technical details of the implementation of the massive screening campaign for the coronavirus in the Rhône, between December 16 and 23.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has initiated a major screening for the coronavirus which will take place between December 16 and 23. The stated objective is that each inhabitant of the region can be tested before reuniting with their loved ones at Christmas, and thus avoid an outbreak of the epidemic after the end of year holidays. After a “fight” through communiques interposed between the region and the city of Lyon, the latter announced that it was supporting this campaign of massive tests.

Lyon will therefore host five screening centers: Place Carnot (Lyon 2nd), Place Valmy (Lyon 9th), Tête d’Or park (Lyon 6th), Place de Frankfurt (Lyon 3rd) and Place de la Croix-Rousse ( Lyon 4th). They are added to those already in existence, in particular that of the Palais des Sports in Gerland, and to the antigenic tests available in pharmacies, for example. How will screening be organized in the rest of the Rhône department?

430 screening centers in the Rhône

In the department, 430 screening centers will be accessible on the Rhône territory, including the metropolis of Lyon. “Each inhabitant will have a screening solution within 20 minutes of their home”, says the regional press release. It could be a permanent or temporary center, in a supermarket, a train station or a high school for example. In the Rhône, screenings will be organized in 128 high schools and 12 CFA (for students and staff), as well as in 12 supermarkets and three stations.

Some addresses where to get tested between December 16 and 23 in the Rhône:

  • Lyon-Perrache station (Lyon 2nd)
  • Gare de Lyon-Part-Dieu, Villette side (Lyon 3rd)
  • Lyon-Saint-Paul station (Lyon 5th)
  • The Carrefour shopping centers of Lyon-Confluence and Lyon-Part-Dieu
  • The Carrefour shopping center in Vaulx-en-Velin
  • The Carrefour shopping center in Vénissieux
  • The Carrefour shopping center in Villeurbanne
  • The Auchan shopping center in Saint-Priest
  • The Carrefour shopping center in Francheville
  • The Carrefour shopping center in Givors
  • etc.

For areas furthest from these screening centers, the Region announces that itinerant screening buses will make the trip. This is the case for Ancy, Saint-Fons, Cublize, Saint-Georges-de-Reneins or even Saint-Martin-en-Haut for example.

What tests?

The tests carried out will be conventional PCR tests – “with a result in 24h”, advance the Region – or antigenic tests for certain people (read here) and which have the advantage of giving a result in 30 minutes. In both cases, the sample will be taken by a cotton swab in the nose, not painful but very unpleasant.

According to the Region, this massive campaign will mobilize more than 700 health professionals. It remains to be seen whether the laboratories, already heavily used up to now and at the end of their rope, will be able to analyze so many samples in such a short time.
