Alienware unveils a 34-inch game screen with QD-OLED and 175 Hz

The progress of OLED technology among mobile phones and TVs cannot be denied, but with regard to computer monitors, the development is all the slower. The screens that have been launched so far have either been focused on more professional users or moved in mammoth-class size classes. The latter is a result of the fact that almost all panels are provided by LG Display, where these are originally intended for the TV market.

In connection with CES 2022, however, the pot is really stirred when it comes to monitors with OLED panels when Alienware introduces its model AW3423DW. It is a game-oriented 34-inch with an ultra-wide aspect ratio of 21: 9 and a resolution of 3,440 × 1,440 pixels. Furthermore, an update frequency of 175 Hz and adaptive image synchronization that is certified for Nvidia’s G-Sync Ultimate can be seen, which means that the model, for the sake of rarity, has an actual G-Sync module integrated.

The parade number with the model is undeniably the OLED panel found under the shell, where this is not signed LG Display. Instead, it is the Korean rival Samsung Display that is responsible for the luminescent pixels and then specifically via the company’s newly introduced technology QD-OLED. Through the use of blue OLEDs together with quantum dot converters, the technology will achieve both a wider color range and higher brightness than the competitor LG’s W-OLED according to Samsung.

When it comes to brightness, Alienware specifies a maximum level of 1,000 nits for the AW3423DW. The monitor is not completely unexpectedly HDR-capable and is certified according to DisplayHDR Trueblack 400. Furthermore, the screen can display 99.3 percent of the color space DCI-P3 and 149 percent of SRGB.

For current connections, a Displayport 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 ports are offered, the latter being limited to a refresh rate of 100 Hz at a resolution of 3,440 × 1,440 pixels. Furthermore, the screen is equipped with four USB 3.0 ports, a line output for audio and a headphone output. For extra flair, the back is also equipped with controllable RGB lighting in four zones.

Alienware AW3423DW comes with a three-year warranty, which covers both pixel defects and burn-ins. The launch in Europe is expected to take place at the beginning of the second quarter of the year, while the price tag is still unknown.
