Algeria: New preventive measures in hospitals

Algiers by: Noureddine RAMZI

A series of preventive measures has been taken by the services of the Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform to double the number of beds in hospitals and take care of Covid-19 patients according to national needs and of the evolution of the epidemic, said Dr Faouzi Benachenhou, director of health structures at the Ministry.

“The Ministry has mobilized, in recent days, an increasing number of beds in hospitals, for the care of patients with Coronavirus,” said Dr. Benachenhou in a statement to the APS.

Noting in this context that the bed occupancy rate increased from 45%, during the sanitary confinement period, to 65%, following deconfinement in certain wilayas and partial deconfinement in others, Dr Benachenhou explained that the bed occupancy rate in intensive care units, amounted to 35%.

In this regard, the same official assured that the Ministry, “closely monitoring the situation” while ensuring the mobilization of essential resources, including a “significant” number of beds, depending on both the evolution of the epidemic that national needs.

For his part, the head of infectious diseases of the Public Hospital Establishment (EPH) of Boufarik in the wilaya of Blida, Dr Mohamed Yousefi warned against the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, following deconfinement and no -respect by the citizens in certain wilayas of the preventive measures, which resulted, according to him, “an overload of the services of the Establishment because of the influx which exceeded their capacity of reception”.

The spread of the virus resumed, after stability was recorded in the cases, during the period of sanitary confinement, he lamented.

The EPH of Boufarik, which previously recorded one Covid-19 case per week among health personnel, receives these days a significant number of patients among the personnel of the Sector, said Dr Yousefi who called, on occasion, citizens “to strict compliance with prevention rules to break the chain of transmission”.

Since last April, the hospital has been under “strong pressure” due to the increase in the number of suspect cases which now occupy 75 beds, he added, stressing that “if the contagion continues at this rate, the ‘The establishment will be unable to accommodate infected patients’.

He also called on the authorities to open other services after the increase in the number of affected cases, which prompted his officials to release patients whose health improved, with the aim of providing beds for new patients.

The same situation was mentioned by Pr. Nassima Achour, head of the Infectious Diseases service at the Specialized Hospital Establishment (EHS) El-Hadi Flici (ex-El-Kettar) in Algiers, who said in this wake that the 94 beds including the establishment is fully occupied, due to the spread of the virus in the past few days.

For his part, the Director General of the Setif EHU, Attout Abderrahmane stressed the need for citizens to respect sanitary confinement, which he described as “the main factor capable of helping to stem the spread of the virus”.

On this occasion, he indicated that the hospital departments of the wilaya suffer from an overload, due to the epidemiological developments recorded in recent days.

The number of deaths among personnel in the sector amounted to 30 cases and more than 1,500 infected, following their exposure, during the exercise of their functions, to the Coronavirus.
