Alerted by you: A sneaky new scam

“Hello! I want to warn about an apparently new phone scam. I don’t normally pick up unknown numbers, but since I’m in quarantine, I answered the call expecting to be wanted for it.” This is what a reader wrote to our e-mail Plovdiv24.bg.

And he continued:

On the other end was the voice of a young woman, who I had no idea who she was or where she was from. She spoke quickly and learnedly, explaining to me that she was promoting the opening of a new rehabilitation center (without naming it) and I could benefit from a free massage by a specialist, as well as to look at the new equipment with which various procedures were performed.

There was going to be an event at a hotel (the name was not mentioned) on August 14th at 1:30 p.m., but they were still waiting for the hotel to confirm that the conference room was available.

After listening to all the naysayers, I asked her where they got my number because I don’t remember giving it out for such purposes. The reply was “Don’t worry, I have a computer in front of me and it automatically generates the number for me and now I have come across yours.

If you want to join, you need to give me your number (?!) and names so I can send you a text message with the hotel confirming about the conference room”.

I told her I wasn’t interested and she kept asking why I wasn’t interested and why I didn’t want to give my personal details, with all the audacity she even wanted me to tell her what hours I was free so they could contact me again, so she had to to give my personal data. Naturally, I did not provide such and closed it.

By writing to you, I hope to save someone the trouble and strife of being misled.
