Alert! Israeli Jets Bomb Gaza Again, Day 2 Attack

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaIsrael launched another attack on Gaza, Thursday (17/6/2021) until Friday (18/6/2021) in the morning. Israeli fighter jets entered the Palestinian territories and dropped bombs on sites in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza.

“Over the past few days, burning balloons were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory,” the Israeli military said in a statement claiming the reason for the airstrikes.

“In response … fighter jets attacked military complexes and rocket launch sites belonging to the Hamas terror organization.”

This was Israel’s second air strike after Wednesday. Israel at that time demolished the building that was accused of being the military headquarters of Hamas.

The airstrikes marked the first major flare-up between Israel and Gaza since a ceasefire on May 21, which ended Israel’s 11-day offensive in the territory. The Israeli attack on Gaza killed 256 Palestinians and 12 Israelis.

“Israeli military chief Aviv Kohavi late Thursday issued an order to increase the readiness and readiness of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) for various scenarios including the resumption of hostilities,” the Israeli military statement said.

“The IDF will continue to attack the military capabilities and infrastructure of the terror organization and hold Hamas responsible for all events that occur in the Gaza Strip.”

There has been no immediate comment from Hamas regarding this latest attack. Casualties and damage have also not been reported.

It was also Israel’s first such attack under the new government of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. He defeated Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been in power for 12 years, in Sunday’s election in the Israeli parliament.

Bennett is a figure who is said to be against Palestinian independence. He strongly supports Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Earlier, Israel’s new government approved the march of right-wing Israeli nationalists and pro-settler groups through occupied East Jerusalem. The march was deemed provocative by Hamas.

Prior to the march, Israeli police forcibly removed dozens of Palestinians from outside the Damascus Old City Gate. At least 17 Palestinians were arrested and 33 others injured when Israeli police fired stun grenades in the area around Damascus Gate.

Hundreds of Jewish ultranationalists participating in the march were heard shouting “Die the Arabs” in Hebrew. In other anti-Palestinian chants, they shouted “May your village burn” to the Palestinian people.

The day after, on Tuesday, hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza staged protests, including commemorating the 1967 Israeli occupation of the eastern part of the city. The protests come as tensions remain high over Israel’s planned forcible transfer of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Hamas responded to this arrest by throwing incendiary balloons into Israeli fields. This was then retaliated with air strikes in the early hours of Wednesday.
