Aldi wants to lower meat prices – despite grievances in the meat industry

The food discounter Aldi plans to reduce the price of sausages and meat. This was reported by the “Lebensmittelzeitung” on Tuesday. The branch service refers to the weakened meat market.

Despite grievances in the meat industry, the discounter Aldi wants to lower the prices for meat and sausages, according to the “Lebensmittelzeitung”. Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd planned a reduction in the sales price on May 29 and also wanted to reduce the purchase prices retrospectively on May 1, the industry newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing, among other things, a letter from Aldi Süd to the suppliers.

Meat market weakened

The discounter thus refers to the weakened meat market: “Our common goal should be to take up this dynamic development at very short notice and convert it into an attractive offer for our customers,” the newspaper quoted from the letter. A similar letter is said to be from Aldi Nord. Neither company initially commented on AFP’s request on Tuesday afternoon.

The “Lebensmittelzeitung” confirmed the company to talk to its suppliers about a temporary change in the previous tendering process. Against the background of strong price fluctuations in individual product groups since the beginning of the year, the aim is to “adapt to the dynamic markets and thus be flexible and pragmatic”. However, this should apply equally to falling and rising prices on the market.

During the negotiations, the discounter “always takes into account both the benefits of our customers and the partnership relationship with our suppliers,” the company continued. The meat industry and trade constantly evaluated and changed prices in dialogue. “This is long-lived practice and usually takes place in partnership.”
