We tested Intel’s new processor on the MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk motherboard.

Introduction, our competitors
As we’ve become accustomed to when Intel (but we could say AMD or NVIDIA as well) come up with a new generation, top models are preferably sent for testing first. This is also the case with Alder Lake, which a month ago a We could try it with a Core i9-12900K. This processor alone costs about 260,000 forints, to which can be added the price of 230,000 forints for the ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard used in the test. But what if we don’t want to spend half a million forints on the motherboard processor pair alone? The assembly we are now testing consists of a HUF 170,000 Core i7-12700K and a HUF 130,000 MSI MAG Z690 Tomahawk Wi-Fi motherboard – so the question is, how much will we lose in performance at a price that is HUF 200,000 lower?

Minus four E
The design of the Alder Lake-S processors, the performance-oriented P and the operation of the energy-saving E cores were described in detail in our previous test, so we will not do this again. Our test subject gives four E less than the Core i9-12900K, but we get eight of the same P cores.
As a result, the processor can now work on not only 16, but “only” 12 threads at a time, which of course means less cache and lower available frequencies. Consumption is also included in the final performance: in the case of the 12900K, the maximum Turbo Power is 241 watts (with a suitable motherboard and cooling, the CPU can in principle hold it for any length of time), but in the case of the Core i7-12700K it is only 190 watts.
