The number of corona cases is increasing in Rotterdam and the surrounding area. 58 people were tested positive in the region on Friday. There were 48 on Thursday and 35 on Wednesday. This is evident from the corona dashboard of the national government.
Converted to the number of inhabitants, 4.4 people per 100,000 inhabitants tested positive in Rotterdam-Rijnmond on Friday. That is the highest number since April 30. Then the virus was diagnosed in 5.4 out of 100,000 inhabitants.
Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb, who is also chairman of the safety region, argues in favor of making face masks mandatory in public spaces. This should prevent the increase from continuing and the Netherlands will have to deal with a second corona wave.
The Safety Region Rotterdam-Rijnmond includes a total of fifteen municipalities. Besides Rotterdam, these are places such as Capelle aan den IJssel, Schiedam, Vlaardingen and Goeree-Overflakkee.
The number of cases is also increasing in Hollands Midden (around Leiden). In the area is Hillegom, where there is a local outbreak that can be traced back to a café.
Twelve corona cases were observed in Kennemerland (Haarlem and surroundings) on Friday, more than twice as many as on Thursday. This amounts to 2.2 positive cases out of 100,000 inhabitants, the highest number since 8 May. The outbreak at Hillegom also made some people from Kennemerland sick.
In Amsterdam-Amstelland, the number of infections has fallen somewhat, after a small peak last Sunday and Monday.
