Albert Heijn acquires number of Jumbo stores in the south of the country | NOW

Five Limburg Jumbo stores are being converted into Albert Heijn supermarkets. With this, the AH fills in a white spot in the area.

“We are very well represented in the Randstad, but we still see opportunities in certain areas, such as Limburg,” said an Albert Heijn spokesperson in an explanation on Thursday.

The Heerschap Groep, a traditional bakery, is currently a franchisee of the five supermarkets in Limburg. The bakery’s contract with Jumbo will end on December 31, 2021.

Heerschap Group owner Stan Heerschap did not immediately see a reason to leave Jumbo with its stores in Nederweert, Heythuysen and Weert, but came into contact with Albert Heijn via via. “Then the ball started to roll,” he says.

“We do not have a glass ball, but Albert Heijn as a supermarket chain pays a lot of attention to artisanal products. We bake artisanal bread in our bakery, which we can sell throughout Albert Heijn. We therefore expect a lot of growth.”

Heerschap Groep is currently a franchisee of another sixth Jumbo in Weert. It will not be converted into AH, but will remain in the Jumbo colors.

Jumbo currently has 674 stores, Albert Heijn has around 950.
