Albers: ‘Red Bull is indeed sensitive to money, look at Robert Doornbos’

Red Bull Racing seems to hesitate between Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Pérez as the successor to Alexander Albon, but according to former driver Christijan Albers it speaks to his advantage in Pérez that he can bring money. According to the 41-year-old from Eindhoven, Red Bull is indeed sensitive to extra financial input.

It seems only a matter of time before Red Bull takes the plunge and sends Albon out of action. Hülkenberg and Pérez are eager to take over his seat in the background. although Max Verstappen although hinted to have a slight preference for Hülkenberg, Albers still thinks that Pérez also has a good chance. The Mexican has a group of sponsors behind him, which can make it financially interesting for Red Bull. It is often said that Red Bull is not sensitive to drivers who bring money, but that is a misconception, Albers thinks.

“They (Red Bull) will soon have to take over an engine”, Albers begins his analysis in the podcast of The Telegraph. “That will cost a lot of money. And secondly, they have had drivers who had paid a significant amount of money to be able to drive a few races.” He cites former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos as an example. “Look at Doornbos, I believe he paid twelve million euros to be able to drive a few more races and test some more. So don’t say that Red Bull doesn’t need money, because they also tackled that at the end of time. The season.”

Albers thinks that Red Bull is particularly sensitive to extra money now, partly because Honda is leaving, a party that took on a large part of the costs. A choice for Pérez would not be surprising. “Hülkenberg and Pérez are quite equal, so I would rather take budget and time”, says Albers. “And a large market in Mexico, where (Dietrich) Mateschitz may still be able to do business.”
