Search Ends for Missing Texas Family in Alaska; Remains Recovered
After nearly a year of searching, the remains of a Texas family of four, who whent missing after their boat capsized off the coast of south-central Alaska, have been recovered. Officials announced Wednesday that the vessel, along with human remains, where found in Kachemak bay.
The Discovery
The breakthrough came after three private Alaska companies volunteered their services in April, including the use of sonar equipment for underwater searches. The Alaska Department of Public Safety released a statement detailing the collaborative effort that led to the discovery.
Earlier this month,the missing boat and human remains were located in 180 feet of water near Homer,Alaska. Divers from the state were deployed to recover three sets of remains from the sunken vessel during dives conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Identification Process Underway
The recovered remains have been transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies and identification. The public safety department has not yet provided a timeline for when the identification process will be completed.
The Missing Family
The family, identified as the Maynards from Troy, Texas, includes 37-year-old Mary Maynard, 42-year-old David Maynard, 11-year-old Colton, and 8-year-old Brantley.
Initial Search Efforts
The initial search began in August after a report indicated that a 28-foot aluminum boat carrying eight people was taking on water. The U.S. Coast Guard alerted nearby ships, and a passing vessel rescued four individuals. The Coast Guard, along with Alaska search and rescue teams, used sonar equipment to locate the missing family, but the search was suspended the following evening due to lack of success.
Community Remembers the Maynards
Christi Wells, speaking on behalf of Mary Maynard’s parents, described the family as enjoying time with friends, relatives, and traveling. Mary maynard worked as a traveling nurse, while David Maynard stayed home with their children and ran a lawn care business.
Cassandra Martin, a family friend, expressed her devastation, telling CBS affiliate KWTX, (It’s) hard to believe that this could even be real … she and her husband and her boys are all really beloved members of our community.
