The AfD coup in Thuringia turns the CDU upside down. Party leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (57) has to go – after only one year in office.
–
Friedrich Merz (64), who only lost to AKK in December 2018, senses a new opportunity. On Tuesday, the liberal liberal lawyer and millionaire had already indicated that he wanted to “personally” make his contribution to the party, in such a way that “it would not jeopardize the unity of the Union and especially the CDU.”

Merz wants to compete “either way”
A week after the election bang in Thuringia, his warehouse officially opened the race. “Image” quotes a close Merz confidant as saying that he was determined to run: “Either way.”
–
While the CDU leadership is trying to make out the AKK successor, Merz declares his candidacy. The latest surveys showed that he knew “the basis behind him”.
–
In fact, according to a Forsa survey, 27 percent of Germans think Friedrich Merz is the most suitable applicant. 18 percent prefer Armin Laschet (58), the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, eight percent want Health Minister Jens Spahn (39).
–
Why is the millionaire doing this?
Merz never overcame his disgrace against Angela Merkel, which pushed him out of office as CDU / CSU parliamentary leader in 2002. His career in business was not enough for him.
–
After the defeat against AKK, Merz contributed constructively to the CDU, and since June 2019 he has been Vice President of the Economic Council of the CDU, a party-affiliated association. He made numerous speeches, particularly in East Germany, and sharpened his conservative profile.
–
Now he tries again. Behind Merkel’s greatest critic is not only Wolfgang Schäuble, President of the Bundestag, but also the influential Union of Values, a conservative group of CDU members. Most prominent member: the former head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maassen.
–
Merz strictly delimited from the right. However, he also wants to win AfD voters for the CDU again. He believes: 35 to 40 percent are easily under him.
–
No more posts with Swiss asset managers
If Merz becomes CDU boss, that would also pave the way for him to become chancellor candidate. Friedrich Merz has already cleared a major obstacle for this. On the day that FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich (54) was elected Prime Minister of Thuringia with votes from the CDU and the AfD, the eternal wannabe chancellor resigned from the Swiss wealth manager Blackrock.
–
“I will now use my time to support the CDU even more in its renewal and to continue to contribute politically,” said Merz.
–
A wise decision. The activity was one of the biggest criticisms of the lawyer and millionaire Friedrich Merz when he fought for the top position of the Christian Democrats in December 2018.
