sport">It is striking that both Gerbrands and Eenhoorn were previously on the supervisory board of the ECV. Both resigned in 2016 and 2018 respectively due to dissatisfaction with the state of affairs at the ECV.
sport">The rest of the five-member supervisory board consists of Thijs van Es (FC Utrecht), Manfred Laros (Sparta), Marco Bogers (VVV-Venlo), while Martin van Geel of Willem II has been officially designated as ‘observer’. These six men, together with director Jan de Jong, must lead and guard the Eredivisie CV for a year or less or longer if the ECV merges with the CED (collection of Eerste Divisie clubs) in the Football League. Discussions about this are currently underway.
sport">A new supervisory board was necessary because John Jaakke received an insufficient majority of votes from the eighteen Eredivisie clubs as chairman ten days ago. Only eleven wanted to continue with the former Ajax chairman. In Jaakke’s wake, Peter Fossen (PSV) and the independent Oege Boonstra showed solidarity. With Gerbrands, PSV is now still represented on the supervisory board.
sport">Initially, the intention was to take a decision on Monday about the occupation of the new supervisory board of the ECV. While the clubs at the bottom of the Eredivisie were quick to decide on their representative (Bogers / VVV-Venlo) and the same was true for the middle bracket (Laros / Sparta) and the sub-top (Van Es / FC Utrecht) with Van Geel (Willem II) as senior listeners talked to the top four about their delegation. The meeting allowed to include two advocates of the top four in the supervisory board, but Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV and AZ were unable to resolve this due to serious mutual mistrust. Then the four clubs decided that Ajax and PSV would discuss one candidate together and Feyenoord and AZ would do the same. On Wednesday the nomination had to be officially made and Gerbrands and Eenhoorn were put forward.
Different challenges
sport">The Eredivisie faces a number of challenges, such as merging with the Eerste Divisie in order to gain more clout in these challenging times of the corona crisis and economic crisis in Dutch professional football. In the meantime, director Jan de Jong has drawn up a policy memorandum for the future, and this piece must be the basis for the future.
sport">The Eredivisie CV must make commercial steps, the decision structure of a five-sixth majority for decisions must be overhauled and the highest Dutch football division must be sold internationally in order to generate more money.
Toon Gerbrands will again take a seat on the supervisory board of the Eredivisie CV.

sport">Regarding the latter, it is remarkable that Ajax’s commercial director has passed Geelen for the supervisory board. He had been put forward by his general manager Edwin van der Sar. The president of Ajax, who is a board member of the ECA (European top clubs), gave up a new board position. Van der Sar did advocate rejuvenation of the supervisory board and more diversity in qualities. Geelen should be involved in the commercial process.
sport">Both ECV director Jan de Jong and a few clubs worked hard for the appointment of Geelen, but Gerbrands and Eenhoorn were not allowed to pass. As a result, the entire supervisory board consists of general directors, who will monitor the ECV’s policy line in the coming period and will review all changes.
