Late in the morning in Düsseldorf, travelers had to expect waiting times at security checks of up to 20 minutes. Baggage handling times vary by airline. According to the observation of a dpa employee, the length of the lines in front of the counters remained within limits. The travelers were therefore relaxed.

According to a trade unionist, there will only be a limited relaxation at the large NRW airports during the summer holidays, at least with regard to waiting times. Because at the security checkpoints, there is no foreseeable increase in personnel in the near future, said Verdi union secretary Özay Tarim of the dpa. The company Securitas, which operates in Cologne-Bonn, emphasized that they are actively recruiting staff. But there are many corona sick reports and unexpectedly high passenger numbers. According to a company spokesman, it is not possible to say when the situation will improve. The federal police said that at the locks, thoroughness had priority over speed.

Again several canceled flights in Cologne and Düsseldorf

In addition, according to the airport, departures to London, Palermo, Edinburgh, Nice, Munich and Pisa were canceled on Saturday. There was a similar picture at the airport in Düsseldorf – connections to Lisbon, Malaga, Barcelona and Milan were shown as canceled on the departure board.

BER expects a big rush in a week

Also in Berlin fall on BER several flights again on Saturday. These include domestic German connections to Munich and Frankfurt as well as flights to Ibiza, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin. A week before the start of the holidays: Berlin Airport is not expecting chaos

BER boss Aletta von Massenbach is trying to calm travelers down. A week before the start of the holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg, she is optimistic.

When it comes to staff shortages at the service providers at BER, the tenor among the companies is: We are basically prepared for the rush in terms of personnel – but unscheduled failures could quickly mess up the processes.

The BER operators expect around three million passengers for the summer holidays. The busiest day will be Friday, July 8th, said airport boss Aletta von Massenbach – the holidays in Berlin will start on July 7th. “We expect around 80,000 passengers there.” The previous peak day during the corona pandemic was Good Friday with 77,000 passengers.

Munich Airport does not expect summer holiday chaos

Even in the south, people are still relaxed: At Munich Airport, people are relatively relaxed about the start of the Bavarian summer holidays in August. There shouldn’t be chaos like at other airports: “We’ll do everything we can to ensure that doesn’t happen,” said airport spokesman Ingo Anspach.

However, the dynamic development poses problems for airports from London to Amsterdam to German locations because there is a lack of staff in many places. During the pandemic, many employees of service providers found work in other industries: “There is a shortage everywhere”.

If you are stuck in the queue at the airport, you should make yourself known and document the situation on site. For example: taking photos of the long queues, picking up receipts for purchases at the airport. “Perhaps also network with fellow travelers and possibly exchange contact details in order to have witnesses later,” suggests Jan Philipp Stupnanek from the NRW consumer advice center.

According to the consumer advice center in North Rhine-Westphalia, this falls within the area of responsibility of the federal police.
