Airplane orders en masse: Airbus makes a vertical start to the new year

While Boeing is going through times of crisis, business is booming at Airbus. In just one month, the European aircraft manufacturer is collecting so many orders that a large part of the total number of previous years has already been reached. This includes orders for a brand new model.

The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus started the new year with a strong surge in orders. After deducting 22 cancellations, orders for 274 new commercial jets were received in January, the company said in Toulouse. This corresponds to more than a third of the net orders that Airbus had collected in 2019 as a whole.

The largest orders came in January from the US airline Spirit, which secured an order for 100 medium-range jets of the A320neo family, and from the aircraft financier ALC, which ordered 102 aircraft of the A220 and A321neo. The ALC order also included 27 copies of the long-haul version A321XLR, which was only launched last year.

Airbus also scored points with its A350 long-haul jets. Air France-KLM ordered ten aircraft, ALC ordered one. However, cancellations were also received for two A350s.

The US competitor Boeing, which continues to face the ban on flying its A320neo competitor model 737 Max, has not yet published any order numbers for January. Last year, Boeing even received more cancellations than new orders due to the Max crisis.
