Germany and Turkey had agreed as part of the EU-Turkey deal that the Federal Republic would accept up to 500 vulnerable people per month. They come mainly from Syria.

This is how traffickers are supposed to thwart the shops. Unaccompanied minors, single parents, pregnant women, the sick or the elderly are particularly vulnerable. According to the Bamf, a little more than 9,000 people have traveled to Germany under the EU refugee agreement since April 2016.

More than 30,000 refugees, especially from crisis areas, are to be relocated to EU countries in 2020. The countries provide as many places for a so-called EU resettlement program, as the EU Commission announced in Geneva on Wednesday. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Germany wants to participate with up to 5500 admissions.

Resettlement mainly from Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan

“Resettlement is a key tool to ensure that people in need of protection do not risk their lives and reach the EU in a safe and legal way,” said Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson at the end of December. It is also an essential part of a comprehensive migration policy.

In agreement with the UN refugee agency, people from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Mediterranean countries should be resettled in the coming year. In addition, people from certain emergency programs in Niger and Rwanda would have priority.

Since 2015, according to the EU Commission, more than 65,000 people have come to the EU through resettlement programs. For each person admitted, the respective EU country receives 10,000 euros from the EU Commission.
