The chaotic beginnings of the A400M military aircraft are largely responsible for this air gap.
Airbus Defense & Space, the space and defense arm of the European giant, announced this Wednesday, unsurprisingly, a restructuring plan which at this stage provides for the elimination of 2,362 positions “by 2021”. The group’s European works council was informed today of the details of the plan, which will affect 829 jobs in Germany, 404 in France, 357 in the United Kingdom and 142 in other countries.

The group says these adjustments, already in the works when the annual results were presented on February 13 in Toulouse, are made necessary “by the sluggishness of the space market” and “the postponement of several defense contracts”.

The division, which accounts for 15% of the group’s sales, made € 8.8 billion in order intake in 2019 but also recorded a loss of € 881 million. The A400M program alone, 14 of which were delivered last year, required a new charge of 1.2 billion euros.
