Air travel: Air travel will be very expensive in 2020 – economy

Whether progressive deconfinement or not, aviation companies are not waiting for the relaxation of health security rules and the reopening of borders. With almost all their planes grounded, they are already getting up to date for the resumption of operations. More and more carriers are thus preparing for a resumption of activities with a third of passenger seats less on airplanes and ticket price increases of around 50%, according to estimates by Alexandre de Juniac, president of IATA (International Air Transport Association) Executive Board.

Multiple airlines around the world are currently pondering the future of social distancing rules imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Nothing confirms that they will be extended beyond measure, but carriers are anticipating. Preparing for the imminent abandonment of a seat between two passengers tends to emerge as a strong trend. The British company EasyJet is engaged in such a reflection, like its Hungarian sister Wizz Air or the American American Airlines and Delta Airlines.

“A silly idea”

This type of measure will lead to reductions of 30% or even 50% of passengers in the cabins. In this context, the president of the IATA executive board has already warned travel lovers: maintaining previous average fares will not be possible for any company under these conditions and “it will in particular be impossible for those at low cost.” In this category, easyJet and Wizz Air remain frequently cited European examples. That of Irish Ryanair also comes back often, but his boss Michael O’Leary has already declared himself hostile to the sacrifice of cabin seats in the British daily newspaper “The Guardian”: “An idiotic idea.”
