AIDS: sex education for young people, a forgotten priority

On the occasion of 1is December, a day dedicated to the fight against HIV / AIDS, the Sidaction association deplores the lack of sex education among young people as well as the drop in the number of tests.

In a statement published on the occasion of the world aids day, Sidaction alerts on “The need to intensify prevention and sexuality education programs”, before adding that he “It is all the more crucial to strengthen them as HIV / AIDS tests have dropped due to the health crisis”.

Sex education, a forgotten priority

The epidemic is progressing among young people, since “13% of new discoveries of seropositivity concern people under the age of 25”, indicates Public Health France, “A figure which unfortunately has not fallen for several years”, notes Sidaction. The health crisis leaves, moreover, little room for other subjects of information. A survey carried out in March 2021 by Ifop for the association showed that young people, already poorly informed about AIDS, were more and more likely to say they lack information about the disease, both in terms of general knowledge and means of prevention or on sexual health. The results showed that in 2021, only 67% of them considered themselves well informed, a drop of 7 points in one year. By isolating young people and monopolizing all channels of information, the Covid-19 pandemic has made the problem of AIDS, which was already little talked about, invisible.

In this context, Sidaction considers it essential to strengthen sexuality education courses in schools. They have so far been too succinct – when they are put together, which is not always the case – and they should “To tackle all subjects: discovery of one’s body, consent, sexually transmitted infections, encouragement of screening, variety of means of prevention, sexual orientations …”, says Florence Thune, CEO of Sidaction, who adds: “We have to get young people to talk to each other, to express what interests them and, from this dialogue, questions of prevention will arise. “

A new awareness campaign targeting young people

To raise awareness among young people, Sidaction is launching two events for the 1is December :

An awareness game, Unforgettables, (imagined by The Good Company for Sidaction) where footage of condom use was inserted into sex scenes from cult movies and series, such as Titanic, Ghost Where Twilight. This game, “Reserved for an informed public” warns the association, invites Internet users to find which film or series corresponds to the scene “That we should never forget”. “A fun way to convey an essential message, emphasizes Sidaction. Whether online or in theaters, young people have never had so much access to films and series. However, in the unforgettable and mythical sex scenes, we hardly ever see the characters using a condom or any other means of prevention. “
