She was one of the most senior cashiers in the store. The 50-year-old was on sick leave since March 17 – the very first day of confinement – as soon as she detected symptoms corresponding to the coronavirus. After her absence, the establishment in which she worked was thoroughly disinfected. The store management has also set up a psychological unit to support the teams.

As of Friday, customers were again able to shop in the big box. According to BFMTV, the police even had to intervene to enforce social distancing measures. Some minds have even heated up. “How can we let them work without mask, gel or protection ? ”, Testified the sister of the deceased, on the antenna of RTL. “In addition, customers do not respect the safety distances.”

Tension mounts in large retailers

Aïcha is the first victim of Covid-19 among the staff of the large-scale distribution group. She was also a union representative. ” It’s an absolute drama, our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones“, Underlines the Carrefour group. His death was widely commented on Twitter and notably sparked outrage from the CGT: “How many employees will die at work without protections, without masks? For 1000 €, the price of a life. ” On BFMTV, PCF deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis Stéphane Peu said: “It seems to me that there is too much tolerance towards the large retail groups. I think that the essential activities of these groups can be linked with more restrictive measures. The first is to reserve only the aisles of shopping centers that are useful for basic necessities: food and hygiene.

In supermarkets, tension has been rising for a few days. Specifically at Carrefour, the CGT has identified more than 550 suspected cases and 181 proven cases, “Including several serious ones.” Unions asked government to impose on large retailers “To only open the shelves of essential products, to limit the opening hours and to close on Sundays.”
