AI in Companies: Experts Reflect on Its Potential to Supplement or Substitute Human Staff

A question mark at the moment is whether the introduction of these technologies will have a negative impact on the labor market, since they make it possible to automate certain jobs that until now have involved qualified personnel.

These are some of the conclusions reached at the event ‘How ChatGPT and other generative AI can help modernize an organization’, which took place this Thursday, March 23 in Madrid by NTT DATA and Europa Press.

The meeting was attended by the Head of Data & Intelligence of NTT DATA, David Pereira; the Head of Cloud Application Modernization of said company, Ignasi Aranda; and the director of Microsoft Solutions in Spain, María Vázquez; in a discussion moderated by the editor-in-chief of Portaltic, Beatriz Núñez.

Artificial intelligence is not a new technology, as companies like NTT DATA and Microsoft have been working with it for years and implementing it in their services. However, The irruption of ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has generated debate about the risks involved in misusing this technology.

For María Vázquez, “the issue of ethics is fundamental”, so that both companies and users should know where the moral limitations of this technology lie, and it has been Ignasi Aranda who has focused on the difference between other artificial and generative intelligences.

“This does not require special knowledge of the tool, so it makes access to these technologies easier. The big change compared to other AIs that we are seeing is that it is available to everyone”, he added.

Around the adaptation of this technology in the business environment, a process in which Vázquez has insisted that “it should be integrated naturally”, for David Pereira it is important to “establish a culture of what can be done and what cannot be done” .

Hence, companies are showing great interest in how they can incorporate it both in their processes and in the products or services they offer to “improve the relationship with their customers and employees,” according to the NTT DATA manager.

In any case, the speakers have agreed that both organizations interested in implementing this technology and their employees should be very aware that Its function is not to replace personnel, but to assist them in automated processes.

“Generative AIs have limitations. They are tools that do not reason, they do not have any critical spirit. They are capable of generating very plausible content, but that is not scientifically proven“, has nuanced Pereira.

In this sense, the director of Microsoft Solutions in Spain has brought up the meaning of AI as assistant or co-pilot of the human team in daily work processes. “We are in control and technology offers solutions that make us co-pilot in different areas”, he added, insisting that this collaboration always occurs with the responsibility that it is the employees who make the decisions.

IMPACT OF AI ON THE LABOR MARKET

A part of this talk has focused on whether the introduction of these technologies will have a negative impact on the labor market, since they allow the automation of certain jobs that up to now have qualified personnel.

“The trends indicaten that we will not be able to cover all the needs that the technology sector demands”, indicated Aranda, who recalled that many jobs are being created that did not exist before.

Vázquez, for his part, has valued the optimization of processes with AI, which allow employees to “get some of that work off their backs to focus more creatively on other tasks.”

The discordant note in this matter has been put by Pereira, who has insisted that organizations should not only think about implementing these AI, but also about transforming themselves and that “a formative tsunami that the system is not prepared to cover” is expected.

“We are going to have to think about new races and others are going to stop making sense. Depending on how quickly this technology is going to be implemented, as a society we are going to suffer more or less”, he added, insisting that it is essential that the efficiency generated with these tools “be invested in effectiveness, in thinking about whether it really they are taking advantage of this technology”.
