After the time trial, Roglič again replaced Carapaz at the head of the Vuelta

The last time trial of this year’s Vuelta was dominated by the Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič and after the 13th stage he wore the red jersey of the leader again. So far, the leading Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz lost on the 33.7 km long track with a final steep climb and is 39 seconds behind the second place in the final evaluation at the beginning of the final week.

After a successful attack in Sunday’s mountain stage, Carapaz wore a red jersey during Monday’s free day and started the time trial with a ten-second lead. Defending champion Roglič, however, confirmed that he was a better time trial, erasing the deficit in the flat part of the track and emphasizing his lead in the final almost two-kilometer climb.

“Beauty, it’s been a long time since I last won the time trial. Surprisingly, I felt strong. I thought I was going to suffer a lot more, but it went pretty well,” Roglič said. He celebrated his last time triumph at the Vuelta last September, and by winning Pau he laid the foundation for winning the title.

The Slovenian succeeded today 45 days after he lost his triumph at the Tour de France in a decisive time trial with a similar profile. This time, however, he distributed his forces perfectly and defeated the American William Bart in the stage by one second. The third time today was set by the Portuguese Nelson Oliveira.

The third place in the standings was defended by the Briton Hugh John Carthy. The hero of Sunday’s trip to Anglira set the fourth fastest time today and is 47 seconds behind Roglič.

Of the Czech cyclists, Zdeněk Štybar managed the time trial better, lagging behind Roglič by five and a half minutes and taking 76th place. Jan Hirt lost 7:45 and will go to the final stages from 43rd place in the overall standings.

The peloton is still waiting for four challenging stages before the final finish in Madrid, a big challenge will be the final climb to Alto de la Covatilla in the penultimate stage on Saturday. “It’s better to be 39 seconds ahead than to lose 39 seconds. But we have to keep concentrating, the boys are strong and we will continue to fight,” Roglič said.

Carapaz has not folded his weapons yet, the performance in the time trial did not disappoint him in any way. “I’m quite happy with the result, I’m still in the game. The possibilities are still there,” said the Ecuadorian rider, who is attacking the first title on the Vuelta.
