After Tesla, LG Chem Ready to Sign with Indonesia

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – After reportedly wanting to hold hands Tesla to build battery factory electric car in the country. Indonesia also seems to intend to be the location for the lithium battery electric car project LG Chem Ltd.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said this week the South Korean company would sign a cooperation agreement with Indonesia.

Previously, Indonesia had agreed with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL) from China. CATL has also signed a collaboration with Inalum for the development of lithium batteries for electric cars.

“Maybe if nothing changes, LG Korea (LG Chem) will also sign this week,” said Luhut in a webinar, Tuesday (17/11/2020).

According to Luhut, Indonesia will take a multi-stakeholder approach in developing the industry electric vehicle.

Including the big players in the electric vehicle battery industry from various countries to invest in the country.

“We want friends to go anywhere, whether he is China, whether in America, or where,” said Luhut.

The plan is that the downstreaming of nickel and the production of electric vehicle or car batteries can begin in late 2023 or 2024.
