After selling the building for Rp. 1 trillion, this is Tahir’s source of wealth

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Dato Sri Tahir has just sold his building to his own business entity worth IDR 1 trillion. The question arises, how rich is Tahir and where does his wealth come from?

Tahir’s journey as a conglomerate in Indonesia has been a long one. Since the early 1980s, he has had various businesses in the banking, textile and automotive sectors. One of its well-known businesses is the Mayapada Group, which engages in banking and healthcare.

In the Forbes Billionaire Index Real Time list, as quoted on Monday (11/28/2022) Tahir’s position is the seventh richest person in Indonesia, with a wealth of $4.3 billion.

Tahir, whose real name is Ang Tjoen Ming, was born in Surabaya on March 26, 1952. He is the son of couple Ang Boen Ing and Lie Tjien Lien. He comes from a disadvantaged family, his parents worked as rickshaw skippers.

The young Tahir finished his high school studies at Petra Kalianyar Christian High School in Surabaya in 1971. He then obtained a scholarship thanks to his tenacity at the business school of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. While in Singapore, he actively buys goods and resells them in Indonesia.

Additionally, Tahir studied finance at Golden Gates University, California, USA when he was 35 years old. This is what has made him even more involved in business until now.

When starting a business, Tahir started from the garment industry. Then he entered the financial sector which was opened by founding the Mayapada Group in 1986. His business progressed faster than he imagined, until he managed to survive in the conditions of the monetary crisis in 1998.

Mayapada also entered the stock market of the Jakarta Stock Exchange. There is one unique thing that Mayapada managed to survive during the 1998 crisis, because Bank Mayapada didn’t take credit from foreign banks, so it didn’t depend on the exchange rate at that time.

He is also known for his frequent contributions to the fields of health care, education and legal reform. This was demonstrated when he sought to invest $200 million in a partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

PT Bank Mayapada Internasional Tbk (MAYA) officially purchased the former Plaza Bali building owned by Dato Tahir and his son for IDR 1 trillion on Jalan By Pass I Gusti Ngurah Rai, Kuta on 23 November 2022.

“The transaction between the Company and GGM is an affiliate transaction because Dato’ Sri Prof. DR. Tahir serves as the ultimate controlling shareholder in Bank Mayapada and is a shareholder of GGM,” Bank Mayapada’s management wrote in a disclosure by information quoted on Monday (11/28).

The purchase of the building is an affiliate transaction. Because the building is owned by Dato Tahir and his son Jonathan Tahir through PT Gatsu Griya Megatama (GGM).
The reason the company bought the building was because the price was relatively cheap. Additionally, the building was leased by Bank Mayapada as a branch office to support the company’s operations.
