In recent weeks there have been plenty of rumors about possible grand plans from Sony. It seems that work is underwaySpartacus‘, a new PlayStation service that will become the counterpart to Xbox Game Pass. Spartacus would be paired with PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, and this week we reported that Sony is releasing the PlayStation Now cards get from stores, which further fueled the rumours.
Also a few days ago a patent from Mark Cerny for a backwards compatibility technique. Currently you can only play PlayStation 4 games via backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 5, but it is not inconceivable that Sony – especially with Spartacus in mind – also wants to make games from earlier generations playable. The patent could offer a solution for this, it was soon suggested.
After weeks full of rumors, various users on the internet are now reporting something striking. Several PlayStation 3 games have surfaced in the PlayStation 5 Store. Normally, a PS3 title in the Store should point you to the PlayStation Now version, but the games that have surfaced now are not included with PlayStation Now at all and are also listed with their own price. The users cannot actually purchase the PS3 games at this time.
What exactly is going on here is still unclear at the moment. Of course it could simply be a mistake. Still, it is something striking, especially after all the rumors about Spartacus and an extension of backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 5. It is therefore understandable that the link is made directly with this. The future will show what Sony is really up to.
