“This is a moment of transformation,” says New York City Mayor de Blasio of the ongoing protests against racism after the violent death of African American Floyd by white police officers. De Blasio announces a police reform.
After days of protests against racism and police brutality, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio presented proposals for reforming the police force in the metropolis. For example, a part of the budget of the NYPD should be used for youth and social work, said de Blasio at a press conference.
In addition, the handling of the disciplinary files of police officers should be made more transparent. These are only the first steps, the details still have to be worked out, said de Blasio. “This is a moment of transformation.”
After the death of the African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis, thousands of people have been demonstrating largely peacefully against racism and for justice for Floyd in New York and across the country for days. The demonstrators also called for a reform of the NYPD.
