After Leipzig bankruptcy at BVB: FC Bayern prematurely champions

Berlin (AP) – FC Bayern Munich is the 31st time German soccer champions. Because the table runner-up RB Leipzig lost 2: 3 (0: 1) at Borussia Dortmund in the afternoon, the Munich team can no longer be displaced from first place.

Bayern’s home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach is no longer decisive for the title fight. For Munich it is the ninth championship in a row, but after the triple of the previous season this year it is the only title. In the DFB Cup they were eliminated in the second round against the second division Holstein Kiel. In the Champions League, they failed as defending champions in the quarter-finals at Paris Saint-Germain.

VfL Wolfsburg is also still on course for the premier class. The third in the table (60 points) prevailed against Union Berlin 3-0 (1-0). The already relegated Schalke had to accept a 2-4 defeat at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim despite a 2-0 half-time lead. Werder Bremen (31) got a point in the relegation battle with a 0-0 win against Bayern Leverkusen.

Important duels in the fight for relegation are on Sunday. Hertha BSC wants to continue its upward trend after the forced quarantine break against Arminia Bielefeld (both 30 points) (6 p.m.). The table penultimate 1. FC Köln (29) receives SC Freiburg (1.30 p.m.). Eintracht Frankfurt would like to keep its chance at the Champions League against FSV Mainz 05 (3:30 p.m.), the Mainz team in turn can make the league perfect with a win.

The prerequisites for the afternoon games were clear. Two weeks ago, Bayern had missed their first championship chance due to a defeat in Mainz, now they have secured the title practically while warming up before the game against Gladbach. Marco Reus (7th minute) and Jadon Sancho (51./87.) Scored the goals for BVB (58 points), who kept their Champions League chance in fourth. Lukas Klostermann (63rd) and Dani Olmo (77th) managed to equalize before Sancho made the decision.

In Sinsheim it actually looked like a rare Schalke away win for one half. Mark Uth (12th) and Shkodran Mustafi (42nd) shot out a 2-0 break lead, but Andrej Kramaric (47th), Kevin Akpoguma (51st), Christoph Baumgartner (60th) and Ihlas Bebou (64th) turned the game in favor of the Kraichgauer.

Wolfsburg’s match winner was three-time goalscorer Josip Brekalo (12th / 63rd / 90th), with which VfL took a huge step towards participation in the premier class. No goals were scored in Bremen. Werder scored a point for morale, but also missed out on a home win to gain some air in the relegation battle.
