A state of emergency has been declared in Atlanta and other US cities after protests over the police brutality of George Floyd. 500 members of the National Guard are to be deployed.

Around 500 members of the Georgia National Guard are to be deployed to protect people and property, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on Twitter early Saturday morning.

According to media reports, Atlanta’s mayor Keisha Bottoms asked for it after violence broke out in the protests following the death of the black George Floyd on Friday. Protesters attacked, among other things, the headquarters of the broadcaster CNN.

The station showed live images from its own headquarters, showing how demonstrators from outside threw objects at police officers in the entrance area of ​​the station. On the website of the local broadcaster WRCB TV, a photo of a burning car was shown.

George Floyd, 46, died on Monday after a brutal police operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One of the four police officers involved in the operation was charged with murder on Friday. He is the white policeman who had his knee pressed against Floyd’s neck for several minutes. Floyd had pleaded for help several times before he lost consciousness, as recorded on video. Floyd was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Protests also broke out in other US cities for the fourth night in a row, some of which degenerated into violence. Thousands of people took to the streets in Minneapolis despite the curfew. Protests have also been reported from New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Louisville, and other locations. Protesters also gathered outside the White House in Washington. Some of them overturned barricades.
