After a devastating gas explosion in Kosovo with 40 injured, the armed forces provide support and transport 2 seriously injured civilians to Austria for medical care.
We have been deployed with our soldiers in Kosovo since 1999 and maintain close ties with the local population. Especially in this difficult time of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are supporting our partners in the Western Balkans as part of our foreign policy solidarity services.

Vienna / Graz (OTS) – On January 5, there was a serious gas explosion in the city of Ferizaj, Kosovo, in which more than 40 people were injured, some seriously. The armed forces support and transport 2 seriously injured civilians with the C130 – Hercules transport machine to Austria for medical care at the regional hospital in Graz. The C-130 Hercules starts at 11.00 a.m. in Linz and is for 5.15 p.m. at Thalerhof Airport in Graz expected. The request from Kosovo was made via the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs BMEIA to the armed forces.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner on assistance: “We have been deployed with our soldiers in Kosovo since 1999 and maintain close ties with the local population. Especially in this difficult time of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are supporting our partners in the Western Balkans as part of our foreign policy solidarity services. “
The air force has special containers for such patient transports, MEDEVAC (Medical Evacuation). These can be equipped in a modular way so that intensive medical care is possible during the flight. The armed forces currently have 3 C-130 Hercules transport machines. Defense Minister Tanner announced this week that a working group would be set up this month to deal with the upcoming procurement of the C-130.
The armed forces in Kosovo
Due to its geographical proximity, Austria has a particular interest in the entire Balkans developing peacefully and stably. In order to help the people in Kosovo, the Federal Government therefore decided in June 1999 to send an army contingent (AUTCON / KFOR) to help rebuild the region. The contingent currently has between 400 and 500 soldiers.
